Smart metering for non-household customers

We’re embarking on one of our most exciting and ambitious programmes to upgrade our water meters to smart meters.

We’re starting to install smart meters in phases across our region. If you apply for a meter or we need to replace a faulty one, we may install a smart meter.

Why are we installing them?

Water meters are a brilliant way to help non-household customers save water. More than 90% of our non-household customers have a standard meter and only pay for what they use.

Upgrading standard meters to smart meters is one of the ways we’re helping to keep more water in the environment in the face of a changing climate and growing population.

By 2035, we will have installed a smart water meter at every property we supply with water that can have one. They collect water use data every day, compared to standard meters, which we only read every six months.

Protect the environment

More water will stay in our precious environment.

Where and when?

We started in 2025 and will have installed smart meters across our whole supply area by 2035.

Our main rollout is taking place in phases. We began in the Salisbury area before moving north to Amesbury and Shrewton and surrounding villages.

Why are we in and around Salisbury?

The water sources used to supply homes in Salisbury and the surrounding areas have the greatest impact on the water environment and some of our most precious habitats - chalk streams.

Chalk streams and rivers are extremely rare. Conservationists and river experts consider them to be as unique as the Amazonian rainforest or Great Barrier Reef.

In fact, there are only around 200 chalk streams in the world, and half of them are in our region. The clear, nutrient-rich waters of these streams support a diverse range of species, including water voles, kingfishers and otters.
